I'm so glad that Stephen Colbert was able to explain how Cingular became AT&T (once again). I've grown to like the orange logo and personally think that the new web 2.0ified AT&T logo is horrible - it took a classic logo and made it trendy. via YouTube
I recently subscribed to the Relevant Network as part of my expanded role at Schweitzer. Until January I had been mainly a participant in the young adult ministry, now I'm serving as the staff coordinator. Our goal is to move the ministry to be mostly led by a volunteer team. It's something I think will work very well, but the transition does require quite a bit of my effort. Hopefully it will diminish over the next few months.
I'm really excited about everything that showed up in the box from Relevant. I've subscribed to their magazine for a couple of years. This box is great for anybody in ministry with young adults. It contains:
A copy of Relevant Leader
4 CDs: Hundred Year Storm,DecembeRadio, Matt Papa, & The Swift
Divine Nobodies by Jim Palmer
Here's to Hindsight by Tara Leigh Cobble
What Now by Marc Estes
In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson
Catalyst Groupzine #2
Several copies of Relevant and Radiant magazines
If this is what I can expect in each shipment it is well worth the price. I've already read two of the books, but they'll be great to add to the library in the young adult classroom.
When I ordered The Blogging Church from Amazon I screwed something up and it shipped normal ground rather than with the two day shipping for my Amazon Prime account (which is a great thing), so it just showed up yesterday. The timing was actually really good though. My illness has made me worthless for anything but sleeping, reading, and watching TV. I opened the box this morning and have already read three chapters.
So far I'm incredibly pleased with what I'm reading. It's directly in line with the conversations I've been having around Schweitzer about why the leadership of our church should be blogging. There seems to be a fear in our leadership about this type of technology and the authenticity it helps facilitate. I think it's mainly because we've had some former staff behave badly when it came to things like myspace, xanga, etc. Jim, our youth pastor, has a blog, but he's only posted once. He gets this book when I'm done with it.
I'll write a more thorough review after I've finished the book.
It's great to be home again after having been gone for a week. Our power apparently came on sometime last night. We were without power for 9 days (Friday - Sunday). I've decided I need to get a hobby that is slightly portable and doesn't require electricity. When our power went out I was bored within a couple of hours. Got any suggestions?
The other big news of the day is that I'm officially sick. I fought through WOW all weekend and finally succombed yesterday afternoon. No unpleasant details, let's just say that the flu - actual influenza - totally sucks. I blame the power outage for my illness - I haven't rested well since we abandoned our house last Sunday.
WOW was a great event. I'll post some details and maybe a short video later this week. We had around 1800 youth from all over Missouri in attendance for Matt Neely, David Glenn, Praiz, and Barlow Girl. We're already starting to talk about next year's event. It's been a long time since I've directed a concert-type video and it was a lot of fun. I know some of you do this kind of directing/switching on a weekly basis. We had some problems with the Folsom switcher/scaler doing keying from the Mac (using ProPresenter) - we'll have to get that figured out for next year. Lyric display over live video is essential. The other thing we'll have to do is increase the number of cameras. But more on WOW later.
All I can say is I want one. I can also say, what the crap announcing something this great 6 months before I can buy it. Oh, and this is now what I'm saving for rather than an Xbox 360.
Sitting in the KC Airport getting ready to leave for a few days of skiing and relaxation in Colorado. We're going with our friends Amanda and Greg - should be a fun week. Probably not much blogging, but maybe a bit. I'm going to try and stay relatively unplugged this week.
About
This is the weblog of Matt Kerner. It is focused mostly on food, technology, and ministry.
I'm privileged to work on the ministry staff at Schweitzer UMC, but that doesn't mean they have any input in this site.
